In as little as six weeks, Google plans to rename its Picasa (photo) and Blogger (blogging) services in time for the launch of its social network Google+.
Tech site Mashable reported that Google also intends to retire several other "non-Google" brands and rename them as Google products.
Citing two sources familiar with the matter, Mashable said Google intends to rename Picasa "Google Photos" and Blogger as "Google Blogs."
Google acquired Picasa in 2004 and Blogger, in 2003.
Video-sharing site YouTube appears to be an exception, however, Mashable said. Google earlier shut down its failed video service Google Video last May.
Mashable said the move has its precedents, with Google acquiring JotSpot in 2006 and rebranding it as Google Sites in 2008.
It acquired VOIP platform GrandCentral in 2007 and relaunched it as Google Voice in 2009.
Rebranding in 6 weeks
In its report, Mashable said the transition from Picasa and Blogger to Google Photos and Google Blogs will occur "in a month to a month and a half."
It said the date is likely to jibe with the launch of Google+, on or before July 31 - the day all private Google Profiles will be deleted.
"We believe Google doesn’t want to have private profiles after the public Google+ launch. Instead, the company is likely to encourage users who want more privacy to use Circles to curate their friend groups," the tech site said.
It added the brand unification effort will be the largest in company history. — RSJ, GMA News
