GMA Network dominates nationwide TV ratings; earned 532 million VS ABSCBN's 302 million

For the first quarter of 2011, GMA netted P534 million. ABS-CBN’s ordinary businesses, meanwhile, delivered only P302 million.

Fresh from its strong nationwide ratings performance in the first semester of the year, broadcast industry leader GMA Network, Inc. (GMA) further expanded its nationwide lead over its closest competitor ABS-CBN this month.

According to Nielsen TV Audience Measurement, the most widely trusted industry ratings service provider, GMA posted a vital margin of 3.1 share points over ABS-CBN this July 1 to 7 (July 3 to 7 based on overnight data).

During this period, GMA garnered 34.5 points while ABS CBN received 31.4 points.

For the first six months of the year, GMA was the number one channel in the whole Philippines with 33.1 household share points, a point higher than ABS-CBN's 32.1.

GMA programs

GMA's lead was attributed to its programming lineup airing across all time blocks, especially on weekday afternoons.

For the covered period, GMA scored a 5.3-percent margin in channel ratings for the block running from noon to 6:00 p.m.

Television’s longest running weekday noontime variety program "Eat Bulaga" continues its overwhelming lead over Kapamilya’s "Happy Yihee Yehey" (HYY), which only managed less than half of its channel ratings performance.

"Eat Bulaga," which ranked 9th in the list of top 10 programs in National Urban Philippines, garnered 22 household rating points against HYY’s 9.8 points.

GMA Entertainment TV’s "Dramarama sa Hapon" — composed of programs "Blusang Itim," "Sinner or Saint," and "Sisid," and hit Koreanovela "Playful Kiss" — has become part of the Filipinos’ afternoon viewing habit.

In Urban Luzon and Mega Manila, which comprise 77% and 58% of total television households nationwide, GMA almost swept the lists of overall top 10 programs with nine entries in respective areas.

GMA’s big budgeted epicserye "Amaya" starred by primetime queen Marian Rivera led the lists of most watched programs in both areas.

The other GMA programs that made it to the lists include "Munting Heredera," "Eat Bulaga," "Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho," "Captain Barbell," "24 Oras," "Spooky Nights Presents Nuno sa Feng Shui," "Kap’s Amazing Stories" and "Pepito Manaloto."

GMA’s flagship newscast "24 Oras" was notably the only newscast in the top 10 programs for both areas.

For the month of June, "24 Oras" garnered 23.1 household rating points in Urban Luzon beating "TV Patrol's" 20.9 by 2.2 points.

In Mega Manila, the gap was even bigger at 3.1 points with 23.8 versus 20.7 in favor of the Mike Enriquez and Mel Tiangco- anchored "24 Oras" news program.

Ratings for partial July

For partial July, eight GMA entries made it to the list of top 15 programs in National Urban Philippines; and 10 GMA entries in the list of top 15 programs in Urban Luzon.

Both lists were dominated by Kapuso primetime programs, which posted a 6.2-point lead over counterpart Kapamilya programs in Luzon with 36.5 household shares versus ABS-CBN's 30.3; and a 7.9-point margin with 37.3 household shares for GMA as against 29.4 for ABS-CBN in Mega Manila.

The Nielsen TV Audience Measurement used by GMA is used by 21 companies including two other local networks, namely, TV5 and Solar Entertainment; Faulkner Media; CBN Asia; 13 advertising agencies and three regional clients.

On the other hand, ABS-CBN is the only local major TV network reportedly subscribing to Kantar Media, formerly known as TNS.

In Mega Manila alone, the Nielsen TV Audience Measurement has a sample size of 880 homes as compared to Kantar Media's 770 homes. Nationwide, Nielsen has a total sample size of 2,005 homes compared to the lower sample size of 1,370 utilized by Kantar Media.

Kris Bernal denies she's anorexic

BY Rommel Gonzales

"Opo, may dance instructor kami. Talagang inaalagaan niya yung bawat galaw namin.

"Yes! Ay, first ko nga... Tama, kasi sa The Last Prince, si Aljur doon," sabi ni Kris.

May pressure?

"Oo naman, grabe! As in pressured talaga ako, kasi pinangarap ko talagang magkaroon ng primetime, e.

"Tapos ito, hindi lang drama. Although heavy drama din ito, pero may kasamang sayaw. Minsan umiiyak ako, sumasayaw.

"At ito yung first primetime ko na wala si Aljur. Na wala yung loveteam namin at iba ang loveteam ko.

"Kinakabahan ako siyempre. 'Tsaka nung nalaman ko nga na sa akin mapupunta yung show, nag-aral talaga ako ng dancing.

"Kumbaga, nag-training talaga ako. As in halos every day umiiyak talaga ako. Iniiyakan ko talaga.

"Kasi siyempre, ang dami nilang pinapagawa sa aking stunts na kailangan kong matutunan.

"Umiiyak talaga ako sa mga stunts. Kunyari sabihin na nating yung pag-split, na iba-ibang split. Mga tumbling, ganyan. So, pinag-aralan ko talaga.

"Pero, okay lang kasi yung effort naman, nakikita naman nila pag pinapasayaw na ako. Kasi nag-improve naman po talaga.

"Ang hirap talaga. Hindi ko akalain na ganun kabigat yun sa akin. Pero siyempre, tina-try ko talaga yung best ko talaga.

"Alam mo yun? Kahit masakit na yung katawan ko. Araw-araw halos nagte-taping pa kami. Almost every day, kinakaya ko talaga.

"And happy naman ako kasi nakikita naman nila na nag-i-improve talaga ako.

"Kinakarir ko naman talaga ang pagsasayaw. Kahit na sa Party Pilipinas. Kahit alam kong nasa likod lang ako, tinotodo ko na."

GETTING THIN. Napag-usapan din ang tungkol sa biglaan niyang pagpayat.

"Pumayat ako kasi nag-diet talaga ako. Nag-no rice diet ako for two months."

Kahit brown rice ay hindi siya kumakain.

"Wala."

Ano ang pang-substitute niya?

"A, fruits, ulam. Pero ulam puwede, kahit baboy. Ulam puwede talaga. Tapos yun, pero wala akong sakit, hindi ako anorexic.

"Kasi sinasabi nila anorexic daw ako. Hindi ko naman isinusuka ang kinakain ko."

Ngayon daw ay kumakain na ulit si Kris ng kanin.

"Pero siyempre, hindi mo naman makikita agad ang effect nun.

"Na pag kumain ka ng isang buong araw, e, ang taba mo na agad. Hindi naman ganun agad yun, di ba?"

Bakit siya nag-decide magpapayat?

"For danseserye din.

FHM. Hindi naman raw preparation for an FHM magazine sexy pictorial ang pagpapayat niya?

"Hindi naman."

In-offer-an na siya?

"Opo. Nung early June?" banggit niya.

"Sabi ko, tanungin muna nila yung [GMA] Artist Center. So tinanong nila yung Artist Center. Pumayag po yung Artist Centre.

"Tapos nung parents ko na, hindi na po pumayag. Ayaw po.

"Ako din naman, kung ano ang desisyon ng parents ko, doon ako."

Bakit siya mismo ay ayaw niya?

"Ayoko. Feeling ko hindi pa ito yung time, e. May oras dun, e.

"Kasi ngayon, kumbaga, sa danseserye nga, yung role ko hindi rin naman sexy.

"'Tsaka maganda yung nakikita lang nila akong sexy sa Party Pilipinas. Yung paminsan-minsan lang. Ganun."

Elmo Magalona and Julie Anne San Jose love-team for real?

BY Rose Garcia

Kasi, most of the kasali sa show, hindi naman talaga lahat, comedy ang forte.

"Ngayon, si Kuya Pekto, si Ate Chariz [Solomon], comedy talaga. Pero the rest, drama factor talaga, like si Ate Iza [Calzado], Tita Gloria [Romero], nasa drama talaga. Pero napapakita nila.

"Tapos kami ni Julie Anne [San Jose], music kami, di ba? Pero yun, napapakita na kaya yung comedy na napapakita sa mga viewers."

Karamihan ng mga kasama niya sa show ay first time niyang makatrabaho, except for Julie Anne and Jillian Ward.

Pero ani Elmo, "Madali namang nakapag-adjust. Lahat sila mababait, masarap katrabaho.

"Ito talaga ang gusto kong gawin, mag-entertain. Kahit noong maliit pa ako, gustung-gusto ko nang nakikita ang mga tao na nakangiti."

TEAM-UP WITH JULIE ANNE.

"Yun talaga, pinaghihirapan namin kapag may ginagawa kami together, pinag-uusapan namin."

In real life, gaano sila ka-close ni Julie Anne?

"Siyempre, gusto ko rin yung company niya," sabi ni Elmo.

"Lahat naman sa Party Pilipinas, mabait, including her. I mean, kapag nakakasama ko sila, masaya naman ako."

Pero kung ang fans nila ang masusunod, gusto nila na maging totohanan na ang kanilang tandem. Wala ba siyang pressure na nararamdaman dahil dito?

"I'm not naman giving in to pressure na kailangan ko itong gawin," sagot ni Elmo.

"Alam mo yung, we're just happy that we're just doing this.

SOLO ALBUM.

"I hope before the year ends, malabas ko na rin," sabi niya.

Marami na ba siyang nagawang kanta for his album?

"Isa pa lang po, but I'm still writing pa rin the songs.

"Everything's gonna be original. Wala munang mga cover-cover.

"May time pa naman. Siyempre, yung first album, okay na ipakita ko muna ang mga thoughts ko."

Ang kapatid niyang si Frank Magalona naman daw ang posibleng gumawa ng music o mag-arrange.

"Actually, we're working on it together. Tinatanong niya sa akin kung okay ba itong tunog na ito or beat, yung ganoon," sabi niya.

Speaking of Frank, pumasok na rin ito sa showbiz. Wala bang kumpetisyon sa pagitan nilang dalawa ngayon?

"Alam n'yo po, hindi ko naman nakikita na kumpetisyon 'to kasi, 'yun nga, we're brothers. I know that we're in this together.

"So, hindi ko talaga makikitang kumpetisyon siya at nagtutulungan kami palagi," saad ni Elmo.

Rumored fashion model victim still silent; Azkals unaffected by rape accusations

Rain or shine, the Philippine Azkals are continuing to train for their upcoming game with Kuwait, reports ABS-CBN News. The team remains focused despite accusations by German national Paul Weiler that four of the players allegedly raped a woman in team manager Dan Palami’s house.

Weiler pinned his accusations on Simon Greatwich, Neil Etheridge, Anton Del Rosario, and Jason Sabio. Del Rosario dismissed the issue as a rumor. “The management is trying to get down to the bottom of it,” he said. In a GMA News report, Sabio admitted to meeting the alleged rape victim. “But I don’t even remember her name… I don’t really have any contact with her,” he said. Meanwhile, Greatwich hopes that the team can move on from the issue together.

Azkals skipper Aly Borromeo blamed haters for trying to discredit his teammates but assured that the team remains united. Winger Chieffy Caligdong also advised the four to ignore the accusations. “Walang katotohanan ang sinasabi nila. Sinabihan ko silang apat na huwag na lang magpadala kasi wala namang ebidensya talaga (There’s no truth to the rumors. I told them not to allow it to get to them since there’s no evidence, anyway).”

In a separate ABS-CBN report, Weiss admitted that he did not have first-hand information on the alleged rape case and that he only heard of it from Coach Michael Weiss and Etheridge. "I thought Mr. Weiss would suspend players, but he didn't move, so I did," he said. Weiss believes that his revelation would improve the national team. “I only want to have higher serious football-minded quality in Azkals and Philippine Football Federation (PFF)... more transparency...and not behaviors which are counterproductive for development of Philfootball and Azkals."

However, Weiler’s motives are also being questioned. The German national refuses to name the alleged rape victim, saying only that he will refer the matter to the German police. He also skirted answering questions why the victim has yet to file a case against the Azkals players. Blogs, social networking sites, and forums dated as far back as 2006 also accused Weiler of fraud. PFF president Nonong Araneta denied that Weiler, who said he was a consultant of the group, held a position in their organization. Cebu-based journalist Mike Limpag also told ABS-CBN News that he met Weiler in 2004 but he began ignoring him a year later when his “football ideas got a lot grander and weirder.”

"To be honest, I've long given up on trying to understand Paul. I think I told him once that I'd go nuts if I try to understand him,” said Limpag. "But, I read that he had a falling out with coach Weiss and the Azkals in Germany. If that's true, then that follows a pattern, where he vents venom, unsubstantiated, on guys who went against him. It happened with me, CebuFA, Graeme Mackinnon, Don Bosco Cebu.”

Craig Burrows, manager of the Philippine Street Child World Cup Team, described Weiler as a “menace.” “When it comes to these rumors about the Azkals, I am totally ignorant but if Paul is spreading this, the source is heavily tainted,” he added.

Some little-known interesting facts about the 'Harry Potter' franchise

By KAYE VILLAGOMEZ

Just as the exit sequel hits Manila theaters today (July 14), Bulletin Entertainment collects some facts – fun or otherwise – about the “Harry Potter” movie franchise in honor of the only non-slasher film franchise to produce as many movies.

Starting with the most important number, the franchise is the highest-grossing split-movies with a record of $6 billion in worldwide receipts and counting.

Michael Gambon and Ralph Fiennes have the same reason why they took the roles of opposing most powerful wizards Dumbledore and Voldemort – they were both talked into it by little relatives.

Gambon (who replaced Richard Harris as Albus Dumbledore from “Prisoner of Azkaban” onwards after Harris’ death) took the role on insistence of his granddaughters while Fiennes told this paper’s Janet Nepales that his nieces and nephews partly out him up to doing Voldemort.

Fiennes was not that big a fan of Potter. “I was a bit unsure because I wasn’t familiar with the films or with the books and I knew it was a big cult but I wasn’t sure about it. It took Mike Newell, who directed the first film that I did, and a wonderful casting director called Mary, to sit me down and talk to me persuasively to say that I should do this. I also have nieces and nephews who are big fans of the books so I think the combined influence of them and Mary and Mike Newell.”

The “Made in Manhattan” hunk whose other menacing role credit includes the prime antagonist of another book-to-screen film “The Red Dragon” was also sold on doing “Potter” after he saw that initial artworks of Voldemort were really creepy. “I have to say I love the look,” he told this broadsheet’s Hollywood Bulletin. “They showed me artwork of the design for his face and I thought it was extremely strong and quite frightening. I liked it.”

Just how sold was Fiennes and his family about the “Potter” films? His nephew Hero Fiennes-Tippin won the role of young Tom Riddle in “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.” Tiffin was seen tricking Horace Slughorn (played by Jim Broadbent) into disclosing details about Horcruxes, a dark magic that enables a wizard to split his souls by possessing things.

Emma Watson considered withdrawing from the franchise prior to “Half-Blood Prince.” She changed her mind saying that “the pluses outweighed the minuses,” and could not bear to see anyone else play Hermione. The film turned out to be most critically-approved sequel.

Hardcore fans of the franchise are also aware that director M Night Shyamalan expressed his interest helming part one of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.” Fans of the franchise couldn’t be happier with David Yates since Shyamalan hasn’t equaled his “Sixth Sense” success in many recent directing tries.

Shyamalan was not the only filmmaker who tried to take book seven thunder from Yates, Guillermo del Toro also expressed interest to do “Deathly Hallows.”

Here are some casting fun facts: Professor Flitwick, played by Warwick Davis, is known for playing the title characters in “Willow” and the “Leprechaun” series. He also starred in “Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi”

Robert Pattinson did Davis’ casting fortune in reverse when he went from playing minor Cedric Diggory in “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” to starring in his own spotlight-positive franchise in “Twilight.”

Most well-known British actors have wanted a bit in the film series. Broadbent, who played Slughorn in part six said “not every actor gets invited, I know some who are still waiting.” When he was tapped to play Minister of Magic Rufus Scrimgeour in “Deathly Hallows,” Bill Nighy said, “I am no longer the only English actor not to be in ‘Harry Potter’ and I am very pleased;” while Jude Law once joked, “Nobody’s asked me. I was a bit too old for Harry.”

Michael Jackson initiated a musical version of Harry Potter. He pitched it to Rowling who thought they better stick to movies.

Rowling revealed Dumbledore was gay after “Half-Blood Prince” writers included a line in the film where Dumbledore talked about a girl prompting the author to announce in 2007 that the Professor was gay and in fact had fallen for his childhood buddy Grindelwald.

Rupert Grint who is Ron Weasley in the eight-film spread said the much-anticipated kissing “Deathly Hallows” scene between him and Emma Watson’s Hermione was one that pressured both actors.

“It’s this moment that’s kind of been building up for probably about seven films now and yeah, there was a bit of pressure thing on both of us to make it believable because we both need to convince people we actually do want to kiss each other which in reality obviously we don’t really. We didn’t really want to do it. I’ve known Emma since she was nine and we’ve watched each other grow up and just to kiss this person felt very strange and quite unnatural really. It took a lot of concentration to really sink into these parts to block out all those 10 years I’ve known her,” Grint said.

Speaking of the Weasleys who are mainly identified for being read heads, the actors who play Weasley twins Fred and Goerge (James and Oliver Phelps) dyed their hair red from ginger the entire franchise.

According to Imdb: “Jason Isaacs originally considered not returning for this film, fearing that his character’s arrest and imprisonment at the end of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007) would mean very little if any screen time in the finale. Upon meeting J.K. Rowling, he begged to be let out of prison. She told him ‘You’re out. Chapter one.’ This immediately convinced him to sign on for the film.”

The movie website also said, “Over 500 wands were created for the film. They are checked out and checked in before, during, and after the filming day is completed. Many came back broken.”

“Deathly Hallows Part 1” is “the only Harry Potter film not to feature Hogwarts, although the Hogwarts Lake does briefly appear in the final scene where Voldemort takes the Elder Wand from Albus Dumbledore’s grave.”

Three 'Glee' stars to 'graduate' from TV show

Three of the biggest stars on hit musical TV comedy "Glee" will "graduate" high school next year and won't be back on the show for a fourth season in 2012, the show's creator said on Wednesday.

In an interview with showbusiness website The Hollywood Reporter, Ryan Murphy said that Lea Michele (Rachel), Chris Colfer (Kurt) and Cory Monteith (Finn) "are not going to be back at all for Season 4."

Murphy said the decision had been taken in order to keep the dark comedy, which features a group of misfits in a struggling high school choir, more credible.

"You can keep them on the show for six years and people will criticize you for not being realistic, or you can be really true to life and say when they started the show they were very clearly sophomores and they should graduate at the end of their senior year," he told the Hollywood Reporter.

Broadcaster Fox could not immediately be reached for comment.

Murphy suggested that other characters would also be leaving the show when season three comes to an end in May 2012. He said that planning for life after high school will be a major theme of the upcoming third season of the Emmy-award winning show, which starts on September 20.

Colfer, 21, who plays a bullied gay teen on the Fox show, has won Emmy and Screen Actors Guild awards for his performance.

Both Colfer and the "Glee" series are expected to feature strongly in nominations to be announced on Thursday for the 2011 Primetime Emmy Awards -- the highest honors in the television industry.

"Glee" has become a pop culture phenomenon since its debut in 2009, propelling its young stars to red carpet fame, producing several hit albums of songs used in the show and spawning two nationwide concert tours by cast members. — Reuters

Team Pilipinas bags 21 Golds in Special Olympics in Greece

Philippine athletes won 49 medals in the 2011 Special Olympics World Games held in Athens, Greece, from June 25 to July 4, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Friday.

Of the 49 medals, 21 were gold, 13 were silver, and 15 were bronze, the DFA said in a statement.

“Team Philippines won gold medals in athletics, powerlifting, swimming, bocce, and rhythmic gymnastics, while the silver and bronze medals were also won in these five sports events, in addition to bowling and badminton," the DFA said.

It added the 47-member Philippine delegation had participated in seven of 22 sports events at the Special Olympics. More than 7,000 athletes from nearly 180 countries competed in the games.

The DFA said the Philippine delegation included 38 intellectually challenged athletes and their coaches and trainers. Leading the Philippine team was Ma. Theresa Macapagal, president of Special Olympics Philippines.

According to the DFA, the Philippine Embassy in Athens gave full support to the athletes during the 10-day Special Olympics.

The DFA said present during the opening ceremonies were international celebrities such as Stevie Wonder, Vanessa Williams, and Zhang Ziyi, and sports icons Yao Ming, Nadia Comaneci, and Michelle Kwan.

“The Filipino community members cheered the Philippine athletes during the various competitions as well as during the opening ceremonies on June 25 at the historic Kallimarmaron Panthinaikon Olympic Stadium, the site of the first Olympic Games of the modern era," the DFA said.

The DFA also said the embassy hosted a “meryenda" of cookies and ice cream for the athletes at the embassy premises on June 21. At the event, swimming gold medalist Raymond Macasaet and bowling silver medalist Roxanne Ng rendered heartfelt song numbers to the delight of the staff.

On July 3, members of the Philippine team also enjoyed a hearty dinner of Filipino food at the embassy to celebrate the victory of the Philippine team during the sports event. — JE, GMA News

'Kapwa Ko, Mahal Ko' reaches out to online Pinoys

ANDREO C. CALONZO, GMA News

“Kapwa Ko, Mahal Ko," GMA Network’s longest running public service program, has tapped the online medium to reach more Filipinos, especially those who need medical assistance.

Former Senator Orlando Mercado, the program’s host, officially introduced the show’s new website (www.kapwako.org) to the media on Thursday as part of his team’s effort to utilize the Internet to interact with more people.

Mercado said that the show’s website was changed —with less images of patients needing medical help and more positive side stories— to “provide some hope" to those who will visit it.

“We decided to redo it [the website] and to make it more visually pleasing and congenial," he said in a press conference Thursday.

The website also provides two ways for donors to extend help to the show’s patients—either via bank deposit or via PayPal.

Portions of the show and appeals for help are also available on the website and on YouTube so that Filipinos, specifically the youth, can watch them online.

Mercado said he personally wants to introduce the show to the youth “to get them interested in philanthropy."

“After 35 years of being on air, the people who know us are mostly old already. We are trying to get the interest of the younger generation through the new media," he said.

The program also set up its accounts in social networking sites Facebook and Twitter last December “to broaden its appeal" to younger audiences.

Mercado thanked GMA Network and Filipinos for their “continued trust" on the show. He likewise said that he hopes the show will be able to help more patients in the coming years.

“Hindi tayo mawawalan ng mga kababayang kailangan ng tulong until the problem of poverty is solved, and I don’t think it will be completely solved, so we will always be relevant," he said.

The show has helped 33,656 patients—including three children with hydrocephalus—through its various medical missions nationwide during the first half of 2011, according to Mercado.

“Kapwa Ko, Mahal Ko" airs every Saturday from 5:30 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. over GMA 7. — TJD, GMA News

The Sadness that is Manila Zoo: Cramped Cages and Dirty Habitats

REPOST FROM KURO AKIRA: http://kuro-akira.livejournal.com/88463.html

Disclaimer: This blog was written for a school project and was not meant to directly attack the zoo or its employees, but only to get the issue known and hopefully spark some action.

I've been hearing about Manila Zoo for a while. People would say it sucks, don't go there, etc. I heard practically zero good things about it. Why exactly were people so negative about it? I got curious, so I looked it up. And wow, was I shocked by what I found.

The Manila Zoo is a 5.5-hectare zoo located in Manila, Philippines. It opened on July 25th, 1959. This zoo is almost 50 years old. The problem? It really does look 50 years old. Another problem? It receives millions of visitors every year, local and foreign. What a shameful tourist destination it is.

Horrible and sickening, isn't it. Yes, a lot of other visitors thought the same way. I read through a number of reviews. Here are some of them:

"I don't know if the horses, zebras and tigers are well fed because they are seemed to be bulimic. The only acceptable exhibits in this zoo are the different species of birds and to some extent the reptiles as they seemed to be well fed.

Most of the animal cages are not clean, as what are the purpose of having bottles of mineral water and other trash doing inside the tiger's cage. I hope the solitude elephant would not die of boredom. I have fond memories of this zoo when I was 5 or 6 years old but now I am even discouraging my friends to visit this zoo."

"This zoo needs to be closed. It's beyond embarrassing. Can't believe the City of Manila would allow it to operate under such deplorable conditions, and permit it to be exploited as a sight seeing spot. My god what a sad dreadful place."

"I am working in Manila for 3 months and thought I would visit the zoo one Sunday. What a mistake. The animals are living in filthy conditions, the food lies rotting on the floor of the cages, the cages are inadequately too small, some of the animals are up to their knees in mud and feces. Their coats are matted and filthy. One poor animal, which I cannot name because the cages for the most part do not have labels, was rocking back and forth at the corner of his tiny cage (pacing). What a very sad commentary on the way we treat animals. I agree with the other person who said this zoo should be closed. The sad part is most of these animals are old and where else could they go. They need a lot of help. I am told it has improved but it has a long way to go."

"I sadly have to echo other comments suggesting that this is the worst zoo others and myself have ever visited.

The conditions in which the animals were housed was depressing.

Regrettably, this zoo has little to recommend it and should ideally be closed."

Reviews from Trip Advisor

I also found some more stories from visitors. A visitor from the US went to the zoo because his wife said it would be a good experience. He was able to watch in horror as a zookeeper punished an alligator by stabbing its head with a nail attached to a stick. (source) Another visitor claimed to have spotted a Philippine Eagle lying down dead on the pathway. The same person said a Palawan bear cat suddenly dropped dead in his cage in front of their 7-year-old nephew. (source)

It seems that there are also issues with the people who visit the zoo. A reviewer who used to love the zoo visited again recently and complained about people throwing things at the animals. (source) Another reviewer reported a man who fed a bird to the crocodiles, but was only answered with "that is no longer our concern." (source)

Some people even called it “The Worst Zoo I've Ever Visited”, and said “Needs to be closed.” Another suggested, “Do not support this zoo. Go to the Philippine Avilon Zoo instead!”.

Sad, isn't it? Our capital's namesake zoo, a complete and utter shame. This zoo was once a good one. But poor maintenance ruined and destroyed it. Because of this, animals are suffering. I'd say they would be better off elsewhere, because this zoo is no shelter.

Unless things change.

According to the PETA Asia Pacific website, there were reports of Thailand planning to send a new elephant to Manila Zoo at the request of Mayor Alfredo Lim. But fortunately for them, it was found that Thailand had no such plan.

PETA Asia has apparently been campaigning against the zoo for years now. They sent the Mayor many requests to visit the zoo and see for himself the suffering the animals had to endure. The requests were ignored.

How are things supposed to change when our officials ignore these calls for change?

I guess all we can do is keep trying. Spread awareness, and pray that somehow, something will happen for the good of the zoo.

In fact, the zoo is reportedly attempting to improve their facilities.

Let's see how that will turn out.

Edit: PETA Asia-Pacific has a petition you can sign to Stop More Animals from Suffering at the Manila Zoo. See it here.

Edit 2: A friend of mine who visited the zoo recently said there have definitely been improvements. "It's better looking than that last time I visited. The Crocs were finally spaced out and the tigers enclosure was cool and green. And I didn't see any frighteningly thin horses." Hopefully the improvements keep up and the horror in this post will not happen again.

The Presidential Spokesperson on the Manila Zoo, July 14, 2011

We share the concern expressed by concerned citizens over the condition in which animals are kept in the Manila Zoo. We have taken steps again to alert the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI), which, under the provisions of Republic Act No. 8485, otherwise known as the Animal Welfare Act of 1998, places the animal welfare certification and regulation of zoos under the authority of the Director of Animal Industry and the Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau of the DENR, pursuant to the provisions of Republic Act No. 9147 (Wildlife Protection and Conservation Act). As a response, the BAI, through the Committee on Animal Welfare, said that it continuously engages in a comprehensive discussion with the animal advocates, particularly on the condition of Mali the elephant and other animals in the zoo. They made a plan of action to uphold the welfare of the animals that should be led by zoo officials.

We have also communicated with the office of the City Mayor of Manila and are confident that Mayor Alfredo Lim will dialogue with concerned citizens. The City Mayor has directed Public Recreations Bureau Chief Engineer Deng Manimbo to receive assistance and support from concerned citizens. Those who may wish to help in raising funds or otherwise helping to restore the Manila Zoo may call telephone numbers 468-9498 and 383-6862.

It is noteworthy that concerned citizens have expressed the willingness to assist in any way they can, to help the Manila Zoo improve its facilities and raise its standards. We are encouraged by this demonstration of public spirit on the part of our fellow citizens. It is a positive sign that the citizenry wants to be part of the solution and not just point out a problem.
